A relay race is a track event that involves a team of four runners using a baton. It is the only team event in athletics and is usually held last in athletic meetings because it is the most interesting of all events.
In a relay race, the distance to be run by each runner is called a "leg," and the last runner is called the anchor "man" or "anchor runner."
There are three types of relays:
Shuttle Relay: It is run on straight lanes, and batons are not used. The exchange is made by touching hands within a one-meter area at each exchange point.
Mid-Leg Relay: It is run on both straight and curved lanes with batons. This relay is a combination of sprint and middle-distance races, with a total distance of "600" meters made up of 200m + 200m + 400m + 800m.
Circular Relay: It is run on both straight and curved lanes with batons. Runners cover equal distances during the race.
