History and Development of Basketball

The basketball game originated in America. It was introduced in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, who was then the physical education director at Y.M.C.A college in Springfield.

Basketball became an Olympic event in the year 1936. Basketball was introduced to Nigeria by American soldiers in the early 1950s.

The body that controls basketball worldwide is FIBA, which in English means International Basketball Federation.

Nature of Basketball Game

Basketball can be played indoors or outdoors. It is played by two teams of twelve players (5 players and 7 substitutes). The game is started with a "jump ball" at the center circle. The aim of each team is to score in the opposite basket.
