Recreation is voluntary participation in sport activities by individuals at their free or leisure time, for the development of their physical, social, mental, and emotional well-being.

Components of recreation

Recreation has two main components:

  • Indoor
  • Outdoor

Indoor Recreational activities:

These are activities that are performed under a roof, i.e., inside a hall or house.

Examples are

  • Dancing
  • Drawing and painting
  • Reading and writing
  • Playing ludo, cards, monopoly

Outdoor recreational activities:

These are activities that are performed outside or in an open place like a sports field, a beach, a park, and all such places.

Examples are

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Horse riding
  • Camping
  • Fishing
  • Cycling
  • Canoeing

Benefits of recreation

  • It creates room for fun and enjoyment
  • It makes individuals appreciate their environment
  • It helps students learn how to make good use of their time
  • It promotes mental alertness and creativity
