Tongue and Groove Joint

Tongue and Groove Joint

The tongue and groove joint is commonly used to join planks to increase width. One plank's surface has a tongue, while the other has a groove that fits the tongue. This joint is commonly used in flooring boards, packing cases, table tops, and wall cladding.

How to Make a Tongue and Groove Joint

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the pieces of wood to the required size, length, width, and thickness.
  2. Dampen properly on the bench and, using a plane, cut the groove to about one-third of the thickness of the wood.
  3. Assemble the pieces and remove any excess material. Note that tongue and groove joints are usually not glued, except for special cases like making table tops.
