Rubber

Rubber

Rubber is a material that can be compressed or stretched. You must have observed that a compressed or stretched piece or strip of rubber returns to its original size when you remove the applied force on it. The main reason for this is that rubber is more elastic than other engineering materials.

Types of Rubber

  • Natural Rubber: This is made up of milky white liquid from rubber trees called latex.
  • Synthetic Rubber: This is made from petroleum.

Properties of Rubber

  • Rubber is elastic.
  • It is water-resistant.
  • It has a specific gravity.
  • It has elongation properties.
  • It exhibits resilience.
  • It is a poor conductor of electricity.

Products made from rubber are found in our homes and they vary. These include the following:

  • Shoe heels and soles
  • Tyres
  • V-belts
  • Water hoses
  • Shock absorbers and engine mountings
