Butt Joints

Butt Joints

A butt joint is the simplest and easiest type of joint to use. It finds common usage in roofs, prefabricated house construction, and simple box construction.

In a butt joint, the squared end of one member fits against the flat or edge of another member.

However, butt joints are not very strong because the end grain of timber is the weakest part of the wood for joining.

Construction of Butt Joint

Procedure:

  1. Plane the two pieces of wood to be joined to the required length, thickness, and width.
  2. Square the end of the member so that it fits against the flat surface of the other member.
  3. Fit the two pieces of wood together with glue and nails to strengthen the joint.
