Adolescence is the period that marks the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. An adolescent is neither a child nor an adult. The adolescence period varies from family to family because of the environment, nutrition, and genetics.

Characteristics of Adolescence

  • The appetite for food increases.
  • They are highly curious.
  • They are rebellious towards parents and people in authority.
  • They prefer learning activities over passivity.
  • They are self-centered.
  • They crave identity and acceptance from peers.

Needs of Adolescence

  • Adolescents need proper monitoring by elders.
  • They need special love and attention from adults.
  • They also need adequate clothing.
  • They need a listening ear from adults.
  • They need special nutrition (food).

Challenges of Adolescence

  • Cultism.
  • Risk-taking.
  • Truancy.
  • Alcoholism.
  • Teenage pregnancy.
  • Peer pressure.
