Active and Passive Voices

Active and Passive Voices

Active voice is the voice in which the subject performs the action expressed by the verb. In contrast, passive voice is used when the subject of the sentence is acted upon by the verb.

  • Examples of active voice:
  • Ade kicked the ball.
  • Joe slapped the girl.
  • Daniel picked the apple.
  • John invented a game.
  • Kevin hacked NASA.
  • Examples of passive voice:
  • The ball was kicked by Ade.
  • The girl was slapped by Joe.
  • The apple was picked by Daniel.
  • The game was invented by John.
  • NASA was hacked by Kevin.

The passive voice allows you to emphasize the object of an action by placing it at the beginning of the sentence, rather than the subject.

  • Examples:
  • The ball was kicked by Ade.
  • The poems were written by Soyinka.
  • The girl was slapped by Joe.
  • The apple was picked by Joe.
  • The game was invented by John.
  • NASA was hacked by Kevin.

Note: The passive voice is formed using the formula "be" + past participle.

  • Examples:
  • Is used
  • Was cooked
  • Can be viewed
  • Was invited
  • Was kicked
  • Were written
  • Was invented
  • Was picked
  • Was hacked
