A forest can simply be defined or described as a large area of land covered with trees and bushes, either growing wild or planted for specific purposes. A forest is made up of groups of trees. Growing under the trees are shrubs, herbs, lower plants, and microorganisms in the soil. A forest is also the home for many kinds of other living things, especially wild animals. Therefore, a forest contains a complex community of plants and animals.

Forestry can be defined as the study and management of forest resources.
