Flooding

Flooding is the process whereby dry land is covered by standing water, which persists for a period of time. Flooding is also defined as the accumulation of an abnormally large volume of water in an area.

It usually occurs mostly when there is heavy rainfall in an area and all the water refuses to sink into the soil but flows on the earth's surface.

Causes of Flooding

  • Excessive rainfall in an area is the main cause of flooding of river channels.
  • Poor drainage system
  • Breakdown of dams
  • Dumping refuse in drainage systems

Effects of Flooding

  • Flooding leads to loss of life.
  • It causes loss of properties.
  • It causes soil erosion.
  • It leads to the loss of vegetation.
